2008 WORKSHOP |
|
|
VIVA ESPANA!! This will be my fourth year at La Serrania, a beautiful Spanish retreat center on the island of Mallorca. If you like making art in exotic settings, join us here where the food and lodgings are distinctly European, and you’ll hear nightingales singing and the sound of goat bells tinkling. Palma, Mallorca’s capital city is a charming place to explore, and it’s easy to plan an excursion to Barcelona after the workshop. Here we especially feel the influence of Miro. Still in the planning stages: 3 days in Bilbao, before the workshop, to see the dazzling Frank Gehry designed Guggenheim Museum and experience this jewel of a small city in northern Spain. Flights to Bilbao are plentiful and this side trip will provide an opportunity to see more art and to have both an urban and rural Spanish experience. Details on the side trip will be forthcoming. Go to www.laserrania.com for a complete description of the setting. Art and the Attentive Traveler Traveling and art are a symbiotic combination––at once stimulating, nourishing, and often unsettling. To experience oneself in an unknown setting, to record sensations in a myriad of forms and media––this is how art can provide the means for the attentive traveler. This workshop is designed with both the inner and outer traveler in mind and explores experimental drawing and painting techniques, emphasizing art as a discovery process. We will make books, constructions and small shrines devoted to the celebration of “the closer we look, the more we see.” Instruction, through demonstration and group exercises, may include making a personal travel journal, drawing, writing and collage, according to the interests of the group. There will be field trips to the local market and beaches to gather and absorb the special indigenous flavors, nuances and conversations, returning to the studio to learn new techniques in both writing and visual forms. Participants will bring a small art kit and other basic materials will be provided. Suitable for all levels. No previous experience is necessary, just a willingness to experience yourself and your surroundings anew. Materials fee: $15 |
